Starting Things Off Right Physically

Well it’s official, summer is over in the McGinnis home. School starts tomorrow, as does a new consistent pattern of life. For those of you who know me well, you me know that I do not believe in “New Year’s Resolutions”. Not that I don’t believe in resolutions. I do. I just don’t believe that you have to wait until New Year’s to start them.

I remember as a kid the night before the first day of school. I would lay in bed With mixed emotions. On one hand, I was sad that the summer was over. On the other hand I was excited for the new school year to begin. I was fearful that I wouldn’t be able to keep up academically and yet ready to take on the challenge of making this year the best year yet. Even at a young age, I understood that the first few weeks of school could set the tone for the entire year.

School year after school year, this is what the last day of summer would feel like. And to be honest, it wouldn’t end once I had completed school. Now, every Fall brings the same excitement and anticipation for a new year. As I head into this Fall, my personal challenge for the next couple weeks is for me as a parent to start the school year off right. My posts over the next couple weeks are going to be centered around “starting things off right” – Physically, Spiritually, and Emotionally.

So here we go!

A couple months ago I was approached by my brother-in-law, Eric DeWitt. He’s a personal trainer in Beachwood, Ohio only about 15 minutes from my house. Eric challenged me to get back into shape again. As matter fact he said he was looking for a “Guinea Pig”.

The Requirements for his Guinea Pig:

Married

Father with a busy schedule

Middle aged

Former military

(Me, me, me, and me!)

The Goal:

Help this person develop the strength and discipline that they once possessed. (I’m in!)

So we started working out two days a week at 6:45am. The workout was one hour long and consisted of both strength training and cardio.

I laughed so hard on the first day when Eric asked me how long it had been since I had performed a “Squat” using a barbell and weights… it had been almost 20 years. Needless to say, he had his work cut out for him!

The Results:

Here I am just two months later and I have increased my bench press by over 50lbs. I’m moving faster, I’m feeling better, and most importantly, I’m losing my gut (which I’ve been working on for a very long time).

Added bonus: I’ve created a pattern of working out consistently!

The Challenge:

Regardless of where you are in the country, I want to challenge dads and moms to get out and get active. (I’m honestly a little tired of seeing all the effort that the schools are making to help “our kids” get/stay healthy. The reality is, if our children are raised in environment of health (physically, spiritually, and emotionally) they are more likely to stay healthy and make healthy choices.

So make a choice this week to get out and walk, run, lift, swim, work-out, or do whatever you can to get moving! Too many of us are “planning” to get active instead of just starting. This week… Start something!
